PYBAR harnesses innovative thinking with North Parkes Mines to upgrade the underground water pressure system. The new pressure release valve system has reduced downtime during breakages or maintenance and has created a more accessible means of servicing and maintaining the equipment. This is a short case study on how we worked with NPM and our supplier to improve a system that required upgrading. PROJECT SCOPE Research, build and commission upgraded water pressure reducing valve (PRV) system for the underground area’s to provide easier access and minimise the down time to underground water lines due to lines bursting and maintenance/servicing. The original installation of the PRV created issues for access to maintain and service the lines. In addition when a PRV failed or required servicing the whole system was down, critically affecting sites underground operations. PROCESS PYBAR researched the situation in conjunction with a supplier and developed a system design. Several designs were put forward and tested in consultation with NPM and the best result was chosen. The system was built and commissioned. HURDLES The main hurdle was the storage of the units once built. The Boards were to be stored in an underground work shop which created an issue of damage if not stored correctly. SOLUTION Access: PYBAR identified and designed a board which mounted the PRV and created a more accessible means of servicing and maintaining the equipment. Downtime: Each valve section was able to be isolated and can be bypassed during repair/ maintenance ensuring consistent water supply to underground operations. Storage: A purpose built stand was identified as being the best means of storage. This frame was built to house up to 8 boards, once building was completed, it was also a safer means of housing as the boards stood up in the frame which made means of lifting much simpler. RESULTS Installation of PRV’s easier and safer. Access to PRVs for repairs and maintenance easier and requiring minimal downtime due to the one valve being able to be isolated whilst underground water continues to be supplied through the secondary system. The above results reduced costs and interruption to development and production to the underground mining operations.
